TRIBUTE

Betty Ann (Louwsma) Ver Meer was born on February 7, 1943, east of Pella to her parents William and Marie (Vermeer) Louwsma.  Betts, as most call her, grew up with her parents and four sisters: Micki, Ethel, Maxine, and Lee, around New Sharon and Oskaloosa. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1961.  On October 27, 1961, she was united in marriage to Gerald (Skeeter) Ver Meer at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Pella.  Betts and Skeeter began their life together in Skeeter’s childhood home in Pella.  A daughter, Michele Renee, and a son, Michael Dean, were born while living there. In 1968, the family moved to rural Otley near Roberts Creek and they soon welcomed another daughter, Marcy Lynn. In 1988, Betts and Skeeter moved back to Pella for a couple years. Betts did not enjoy living in town and they moved back to the country to make their home in Lakeside Heights southwest of Pella.  Skeeter was diagnosed with lymphoma/leukemia in 1998 and Betts cared for him until March 2002 when he passed away in their home.  Betts continued to live at their home in Lakeside Heights until 2011 when she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to be closer to her youngest daughter and enjoy the warmer temperatures.  Her son, Mike joined her in 2014 to help with her various health issues.

Betts was always full of life, laughing and sharing her joy with others even through her affliction of health issues including arthritis which started when she was 33.  She had several jobs including 15 years at Heritage Lace in Pella and opening Fire It Up Ceramic Shop after Skeeter passed.  Betts spent years camping and especially enjoyed the Iowa State Fair and Marion County Fair.  She loved to watch her kids and grandkids show their animals.  If you needed to know a placing Betts would have a record of it. She also took pride in her floral arrangements at the fair and was a member of the Knoxville Federated Garden Club. Betts spent countless hours in her gardens, learning a new style of gardening in the heat of Arizona.  When her mobility became limited she still enjoyed her daily walks with her dog Jake, coloring and texting family with her signature Tee Hee.  Her independent, hardworking, stubborn nature lives on in her family.

On June 12, 2017, Betts entered a wonderful place where she will never have to experience pain and will be able to smell all the flowers to her heart’s content.  Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren: Shelly Sample and Bob Schroder of Otley, Iowa, Mike Ver Meer of Phoenix, Arizona, and Marcy Ver Meer of Phoenix, Arizona; Ashley (Ted) Knust and their daughter Annalee, Matt Sample and his son Cole, Liz (Joel) Spring, Justin Ver Meer and his daughter Autumn, Mallory Ver Meer and her daughters Angel and Hayven.  Of her original family, Betts leaves three older sisters: Ethel Strang of Harlem, Georgia, Maxine McKee of Tucson, Arizona, and Lee De Bruin of Pella, Iowa.

Betts was preceded in death by her husband Skeeter, her parents and her sister Micki Weatherby and her sisters-in-law Gladys Van Soelen, Albertha Newendorp, and Delores Graf.
