Husband: The late Virgil Klein
Daughters: Lola (Rick) Peck – Edgerton, Kansas
Jeanne Hunter – Monroe, Iowa
Leola Maxine (Niemantsverdriet) Klein was born August 24, 1924, on the family farm near Otley, Iowa, to Asa and Jennie (Van Peursem) Niemantsverdriet.
On February 27, 1947, Leola was united in marriage to Virgil Paul Klein at the home of Wilbur and Bea Hugen. They were blessed with two daughters: Lola and Jeanne.
Leola was baptized and made confession of her faith June 28, 1942, in the Third Reformed Church of which she attended for 65 years. She was active and instrumental in beginning Heartland Reformed Church. Leola started a Baby Roll, a Ladies Aid group called Willing Workers, and she was also the picture historian of Heartland from 1990-1995. Leola was a past member of Pella Golf and Country Club. She loved genealogy and history. Leola was the author of two country school books, one titled “Battle Ridge School.” In 1947, she worked in the Otley telephone office, did housework for ladies, and later worked at the Pella Chronicle office folding paper. She went to Oskaloosa with their paper route each Wednesday. She also worked at Pella Corporation. Leola drove a school bus for Otley school; she taught the children the Ten Commandments, and each morning they would recite what they had learned. At the end of the school year, she would take the kids to Pella and treat them with ice cream. After retirement she and Virgil went to Arizona to enjoy the leisure life. When Virgil became ill she took care of him for twelve years. After Virgil passed, she was blessed with four more years.
Leola went to her heavenly home on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Pella Regional Health Center at the age of ninety-two. Leola is survived by: her two daughters, Lola (Rick) Peck and Jeanne Hunter; grandchildren, Jeff (Brandy) Thomasson, Jody Thomasson, Jessica (Phillip) Lanzarotta, Jill (Ryan) Ingraham; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Jacob, and Brooklyn Thomasson, and Phinley and Jordyn Lanzarotta; sister Viola Vande Noord, brother-in-law Arvin and Norma Klein; sisters-in-law: Gladys and Jim Karlin, Gerry and Gerald Angove and Darlene Klein.
She is preceded in death by her husband Virgil, her parents, parents-in-law Gradus and Anna Klein, sister Bernice and Wilbur Hugen, sister-in-law Alice and Harold Van Essen, and brothers-in-law Willard and Roberta Klein, John Vande Noord, John De Ronde, and Wayne Klein.
