TRIBUTE

Marlene (Hutchison) Madden was born August 23, 1935, to Frank Hutchison and Marjorie “Marge” (Twaddle) Hutchison on the family farm near Coin, Iowa.  The third of four children, Marlene graduated from New Market High School in 1953. Upon graduation she attended Clarinda Junior College.  Upon receiving her teaching certificate she taught country school.  She started writing letters to John Madden when he was in the Navy. They began dating when he was home on leave. Their courtship lasted four years and they were united in marriage on June 16, 1957, at the Methodist Church in New Market, Iowa. John and Marlene began their married life together in Fremont, Nebraska.  To this union five children were born:  Linda Kay, Nancy Ann, John William, Connie Margene and Debra Sue.

In 1964, they relocated to Pella, Iowa.  They lived in Pella for three years before moving to Otley.  Marlene was an active mother of five. Busy with all the children’s activities and driving them place to place. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, and Bible school teacher. She was active in the children’s education and always helping out at the school.

In 1982, Marlene began working at Central College.  During her 20 years at Central she made many lifetime friends.

After retiring, John and Marlene wintered in Donna, Texas.  In the 14 years in Texas they made many friends from across the country.

In 2007, John and Marlene celebrated their 50th anniversary surrounded my friends and family.

Marlene enjoyed gardening, camping and spending time with friends and family. Marlene will always be remembered for her infectious laugh and the joy she always shared with everyone.  Marlene was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed her numerous card groups and her time with friends for coffee. Marlene volunteered at the clothing bank and congregate meal site for years.
