Myron F. Van Wyk, son of Gerrit J. and Cornelia Roorda Van Wyk, was born on April 1, 1919 near Prairie City, Iowa. He was the ninth child born into the family of eleven. He grew up on farms around Prairie City, Monroe, Eddyville, and Otley. He graduated from the Otley School, completing the eighth grade. Mike, as he was known, passed away at the Pella Hospice Comfort House on the morning of Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the age of eighty-eight years.
On January 11, 1946 Mike was united in marriage with Johnita Vos at the Otley Reformed Church. Three children were born into the family: Marla, Stanley, and Bradley. Mike and Johnita lived in the Otley area for thirty-five years, moving to Pella in 1988. Mike was a tank wagon operator for the Otley Farmer's Co-op for thirty-three years.
He was a member of the Otley Reformed Church where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. Mike was a World War II veteran serving his country in the U.S. Army, 133rd Infantry Regiment from April 14, 1941 to June 12, 1945.
Mike's favorite hobby after retirement was golfing. He spent many enjoyable hours with friends out on the course. He also enjoyed playing cards with various groups of friends and watching baseball games.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of sixty-one years, Johnita; three children and their spouse: Marla and Dennis Bandstra of Sioux Center, Iowa, Stanley and Cheryle Van Wyk of Des Moines, Iowa, Bradley and Rozanne Van Wyk of Des Moines, Iowa seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Richard (Helen) Van Wyk and Ray and Gertrude Van Wyk; one sister: Geraldine (Alonzo) Ver Ploeg; and two sisters-in-law: Margaret (Gerrit) Van Wyk and Ada (Alfred) Van Wyk.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; his brothers: Cornie, Gerrit, Alfred, Warren, Lewis Van Wyk; his sisters: Adrianna De Jong Den Hartog and Fannetta Ver Ploeg De Cook.
Mike will be remembered for his ever ready smile and sense of humor. His deep faith in God was a real inspiration to his family and friends.
