Mike and Johnita lived in the Otley area for thirty-five years, moving to Pella in 1988. Mike was a tank wagon operator for the Otley Farmer's Co-op for thirty-three years.

He was a member of the Otley Reformed Church where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. Mike was a World War II veteran serving his country in the U.S. Army, 133rd Infantry Regiment from April 14, 1941 to June 12, 1945.

Mike's favorite hobby after retirement was golfing. He spent many enjoyable hours with friends out on the course. He also enjoyed playing cards with various groups of friends and watching baseball games.
