Alfred and his brothers and sisters attended the Battle Ridge Country School. On October 2, 1942 Alfred was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving his country in England. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945 and returned to Pella. After the war Alfred met Doris Margaret Verros, who he married on September 8, 1949 at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. To this union four children were born: Phyllis Ann, Harris Alvin, David Gene, and Joleen Beth.
Alfred and Doris farmed in the Pella area prior to moving to Pella in 1968. At that time Alfred began working at Van Gorp Manufacturing where he was employed as a welder and later worked in the shipping department.
Alfred was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church in Pella where he served as an elder, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Christian Education Council.
He enjoyed yard work, gardening, puzzles, woodworking, and was a skilled welder, creating yard ornaments and containers for his many flowers. He and Doris also enjoyed traveling, especially to those states where their children lived.
