In Memory Of

Alfred Steenhoek

June 1, 1920 - December 21, 2007

Alfred H. Steenhoek, son of Hugo and Johanna (Vander Streek) Steenhoek, was born June 1, 1920 near Pella, Iowa. He passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center - Long Term Care on Friday, December 21, 2007 at the age of eighty-seven years.

Alfred and his brothers and sisters attended the Battle Ridge Country School. On October 2, 1942 Alfred was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving his country in England. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945 and returned to Pella. After the war Alfred met Doris Margaret Verros, who he married on September 8, 1949 at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. To this union four children were born: Phyllis Ann, Harris Alvin, David Gene, and Joleen Beth.

Alfred and Doris farmed in the Pella area prior to moving to Pella in 1968. At that time Alfred began working at Van Gorp Manufacturing where he was employed as a welder and later worked in the shipping department.

Alfred was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church in Pella where he served as an elder, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Christian Education Council.

He enjoyed yard work, gardening, puzzles, woodworking, and was a skilled welder, creating yard ornaments and containers for his many flowers. He and Doris also enjoyed traveling, especially to those states where their children lived.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of fifty-eight years, Doris; three children and their spouses: Phyllis and Nolan Palsma of Syracuse, New York, Harris and Dianne Steenhoek of Leighton, Iowa, and Joleen and Scott Opsal of Madison, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Reuben Steenhoek of Pella; two brothers-in-law: Richard Van Wyk and Gerald and Maxine Verros; and three sisters-in-law: Betty Mitchel, Mary Vander Pol, and Georgia Steenhoek.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, David, who passed away in January 1984; the following brothers and sisters and their spouses: Lester Steenhoek, Myron and Ruth Steenhoek, a sister who died in infancy, Viola and Warren Van Wyk, Helen Van Wyk, Arthur Steenhoek who died at the age of one year, Ruth (Reuben) Steenhoek, Clarice (Reuben) Steenhoek, Dale Steenhoek, and a brother who died in infancy.
