In Memory Of

Russell L. Norton
Pella, Iowa

February 15, 1918 - January 24, 2008

Russell Loraine Norton was born February 15, 1918 to Sherman and Blanch (Eshelman) Norton in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. The family later moved to Iowa. He was educated at Mohawk Country School in Jefferson County, Iowa.

Russell was part of the 28th U.S. Naval Seabees during World War II. He entered the service September 18, 1942 and served through December 20, 1945. He was always very proud of his country and his time served.

He married Shirley Statler on April 11, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Russell and Shirley had one daughter, Cheryl Mae, born June 1, 1949. During that time Russell worked as a machine shop supervisor at Dexter Company in Fairfield, Iowa. After thirty-five years he retired from Dexter in 1981. That year they moved to Pella, Iowa to be closer to their daughter, Cheryl; son-in-law, Steven Westra; and granddaughter, Carrie. Carrie Lynn was Russell's pride and joy. He resided in Pella twenty-six years.

Russell, eighty-nine years old, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2008 after nine days at the Pella Hospice Comfort House. While there he was surrounded with the love of his family.

Russell was a quiet, kind, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed boating and spending time near the river, gardening and flowers, time in his workshop, making broken things work, woodworking, and making crafts that he sold at shows across the state.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; one daughter, Cheryl Westra; son-in-law, Steven Westra all of Pella; one granddaughter, Carrie Schwab and husband Martin of Abington, Pennsylvania; two sisters: Dorothy Pohren of Lockridge, Iowa and Velma Derby of Brighton, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Viola Norton of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Viola Norton; and six brothers: Arthur, Dale, Floyd, Harold, Raymond, and Verle.
