William received his education at the Sully Christian School, graduating from eighth grade.
Prior to his marriage William worked as a hired man in Reasnor, Iowa, and later for his uncle in the trucking business. He also did yard work for various people in the area.
On January 19, 1944, William was united in marriage with Jennie Henrietta Klein at the home of her parents in Pella. To this union a daughter, Mary Jane, was born.

He was a former member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church, the Pella Protestant Reformed Church, and the Pella First Christian Reformed Church where he served on the Evangelism Committee.
William enjoyed walking, attending baseball games, nature, feeding the birds, taking care of flowers, and going downtown to the Thursday night band concerts. He was always happy and always smiling.
