In Memory Of

Evelyn Crum
(Age 97)

November 21, 1911 - June 25, 2009

Evelyn Crum, the only child of Adrian Jim and Gertrude Vroom Crum, was born November 21, 1911, on the family farm located south of Monroe. She passed away at the Pella Regional Hospital on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the age of ninety-seven.

She attended Monroe High School through the tenth grade and then transferred to Pella High School where she graduated.

After high school Evelyn attended AIB in Des Moines. While living in Des Moines, she worked at several office jobs. She helped start a small Baptist Church near Drake University which flourished for several years until the pastor became ill and passed away. During this time Evelyn rejoined the Monroe Baptist Church.

Evelyn accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized by immersion and became a member of the Monroe Baptist Church.

Evelyn moved to Chicago, Illinois, to attend Moody Bible Institute. She worked for Moody Press while a student and continued working there for fifteen months after graduating from Moody.

When her mother became ill, Evelyn felt it was her duty to go home to care for her since she was an only child and single. Evelyn never regretted that decision.

While on the farm Evelyn helped with different farm activities. She drove an Oliver 77 tractor while doing chores and to haul water to the animals in the pasture.

While on the farm she had some chickens and sold the eggs to many of her friends in Des Moines. She also raised cows to keep the pasture clipped.

Evelyn loved to bake and was known for her homemade angel food cakes and bread. She gave many cakes to her friends.

Gardening, raising many beautiful flowers, travel, and reading were some of the things she most enjoyed. Her greatest joy was teaching the Bible to children. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and an evening Bible class for children for many years.

She was also a counselor at the Clear Lake Camp. She was the secretary for the Moody Bible Institute Alumni Association for two years.

After both parents died, Evelyn stayed on the family farm for more than thirty years. The farm became a century farm during this time.

Evelyn attended the Monroe Baptist Church most of her life. After moving to Pella she attended the Berean Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her extended family and many friends.
