Jessie Van Vark, daughter of Harry and Lena Van Rees Hiemstra, was born on October 7, 1918, near Otley, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of ninety-two.
Jessie spent her youth in the Otley area and graduated from the Valley View School. She became a member of the Otley Reformed Church and was currently an active member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.
Jessie and LeRoy Van Vark were married on March 7, 1940. They lived in Harvey and Des Moines until Roy’s induction into the Army. Jessie then resided with her mother and sister. She later moved to Eddyville to be a homemaker for her brother, Leonard, whose wife had passed away leaving three young boys to be cared for, all while raising her own daughter, Virginia.
Upon Roy’s return, they lived in the Otley area, and then moved to Pella until 1951. At that time, they started farming with her brother on the home place. They retired and returned to Pella in 1996.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four children: Virginia Mathes, Roger and Nancy Van Vark, Mary and Charles Snyder, and David and Brenda Van Vark; ten grandchildren: Chuck and Michelle Snyder, Bradley and Jessica Van Vark, Kelly Mathes, Amy and Lance Klein, Heidi and Chris Hubbell, Stacy and Zach Kanis, Michelle and Kevin Jones, Jill and Shaun De Vries, James Snyder and Melanie Snyder; nine great-grandchildren: Andy and Katie Snyder, Alexa and Logan Klein, William Roy Van Vark, Ryker Jones, Zander Kanis and Storm and Colton Babcock; and her sister-in-law Aletta Hiemstra.
Jessie loved her garden, flowers, sewing, quilting, baking, cooking, and most of all caring for her family. She particularly enjoyed the Hiemstra family reunions, where attendance was mandatory.
Jessie was the sole survivor of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy, on September 27, 2008; her siblings: Emma Hiemstra, Leonard Hiemstra, Ann Bothof, Andrew Hiemstra, and Edward Hiemstra.
Jessie will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends.
