Carroll Gene Dop was born on January 9, 1936 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Ralph and Carolyn (Groenenboom) Dop. He was raised on a farm near Rose Hill, Iowa. During his time on the farm he showed Guernsey purebred cattle at the Southern Iowa Fair and the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo. Gene attended Brush College Elementary School and graduated from Lacey High School with the class of 1954. He then received his business degree from American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
On December 7, 1956, Gene was united in marriage with Annette Rooda. They made their home in Oskaloosa for a short time before moving to Haywood, Minnesota, for Gene's banking position. After leaving Haywood, they moved to Pella where Gene worked as a teller and loan officer for sixteen years at the Pella National Bank. He sold insurance, real estate, and clerked sales for Bill Slycord. Gene and Annette lived on a farm near Leighton for twenty-seven years. While living on the farm, their house burned down and they had to rebuild their home.
Gene passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of seventy-five.
Gene made confession of faith at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa and was a long-time member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. He enjoyed taking his family on vacations, enjoyed flea markets, and going to auctions. He enjoyed collecting and spent many hours doing wood working. He often could be found taking part in the many summer activities on the Pella square on Thursday nights. Gene will be always be remembered for his good sense of humor and playing jokes on his kids.
