In Memory Of

Marilyn Amber
Pella, Iowa
(Age 77)

January 18, 1934 - November 23, 2011

Marilyn Joyce (Fleener) Amber was born on January 18, 1934, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to John and Opal (Keeran) Fleener. Marilyn passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at the age of seventy-seven.

Marilyn was educated in the Oskaloosa Community School District. On May 31, 1952, she was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, John Frederick Amber, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: John Jr., Connie, Susan, and Diane.

Seeking a warmer climate the Amber family moved to southern California in 1962. For the first few years, Marilyn took care of family and home. Her first job in Los Angeles was building boat motors and chainsaws for McCulloch. She later worked manufacturing refrigerator parts for Philco in Inglewood. For part-time employment she managed a small housing complex in Lawndale where they resided. Marilyn was last employed by Boilermakers Local 92 in South Gate as a general office clerk where she spent many years before retiring. She and "Fred", her husband, later retired to Bullhead City, Arizona. Being the second child of nine, Marilyn learned at an early age to have a strong work ethic and took pride in a job well done. Following Fred's death in 2009, Marilyn moved to Pella, Iowa.

Marilyn enjoyed weekend camping trips in their motor home with friends and family. She and Fred would spend days on the lake boating and fishing. She loved having the family come and share in the recreation found on the Colorado River and Lake Katherine. One of their greatest pleasures was hosting the different "Iowa" family members who came for summer vacations, or stopped by for a quick visit while in the area. Her love of crochet came from her mother, and she in turn taught daughters, Connie and Diane and a loving niece, Shannon Harrell that same gift.

Those left to cherish Marilyn's memory are the following children: John Amber, Jr. of Carson, CA.; Connie Cogley of Pella, IA; Susan Santania of Riverside, CA; and Diane (Arnold) Acosta of Long Beach, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Torres, Marlene Hembree, John Cogley, Andrew Cogley, Brandy Gonzales, Christina Knighton, Carla Roddy, January Mendoza, Stephanie Acosta, and Michelle Acosta. Her brother, Ron Fleener, and her sisters, Margurite Burch and Linda Walker, also survive.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers William "Bill" Fleener, Larry Fleener, and Jerry Fleener, and her sisters Judy Baker and Patty Maxie.
