Jerry Lee Van Hal was born on November 20, 1940, to Jacob and Dena (Spoelstra) Van Hal near Sully, Iowa. He went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, while a patient at Mercy Medical Center following a lengthy stay due to complications from surgery and his recent battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Jerry attended Sully Christian Grade School and Lynnville-Sully High School. He made profession of faith at Sully Christian Reformed Church. Jerry had a strong love for the Lord and the preaching of God's Word.
On June 29, 1962, Jerry was united in marriage with Darlene Bensink at First Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. They were best friends through fifty wonderful years of marriage. To this union four children were born: Darla, Denise, Joel, and Todd. They farmed in the Sully and Pella area. Then Jerry worked at Vermeer Manufacturing for twenty years, retiring in 2008.
Jerry was a faithful member of Covenant Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Bibles 4 Missions Thrift Center with his wife, Darlene. Jerry loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially the times when they could all be together. One of his favorite hobbies was woodworking. He enjoyed building unique wooden construction equipment and trucks in his shop to give to others. He also was a huge John Deere fan and had a large collection of farm toys including several pieces of equipment that he had used on the farm.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Darlene; his four children, their spouses, and his grandchildren: Darla (Russ) Dykstra (Dustin, Dakota, and Dylan) of Kansas City, Missouri, Denise (Scott) Kimm (Jonathan, Aaron, and Rose Marie) of Churchill, Montana, Joel (Stacy) Van Hal (Mason Wagaman) of Creston, Iowa, and Todd (Diana) Van Hal (Leah and Drew) of Eldridge, Iowa; his siblings: Geurt (Carolyn) Van Hal of Palos Heights, Illinois, Sophia Bennink of Des Moines, Iowa, Evelyn Vanden Oever of Chariton, Iowa, Gerrit (Shirley) Van Hal of Pella, Iowa, Cornie (Marinella) Van Hal of Pella, Iowa, Darlene (Glenn) Summers of West Des Moines, Iowa, Ruth Van Hal of Pella, Iowa, and Nancy (Carl) Jensen of Golden, Colorado; brother-in-law Henry Bensink of Pleasantville, Iowa; brother-in-law Russell Van Genderen of Monroe, Iowa; sister-in-law Marjorie (Floyd) Wilcox of Lancaster, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Dena; brother Raymond Van Hal; sisters Jennie and Helene Van Hal; brothers-in-law Donald Bennink and James Vanden Oever; parents-in-law, Nelis and Esther Bensink; and sisters-in-law Betty Bensink and Ruth Van Genderen.
