In Memory Of

Abe J. Nunnikhoven
Pella, Iowa
(Age 84)

December 30, 1927 - November 23, 2012

Abraham J. Nunnikhoven was born in the rural Knoxville, Iowa home of his maternal grandfather on December 30, 1927, to Anthony J. and Bertha Slykuis Nunnikhoven. He was the oldest of seven sons born into the family. After he completed the eighth grade at South Flagler School, the family resided in the Sully and Pella areas, where Abe helped his father farm and also worked as a hired farm hand for a neighbor.

On October 24, 1950, Abe was inducted into the Army. He served in the 21st Infantry Regiment north of the 38th Parallel on the front lines of the Korean War from March 1951-January 1952. He received his Honorable Discharge April 1,1957.

On September 24, 1952, he was united in marriage with Esther Ruth Den Hartog in Pella. The following year they moved to the family farm southeast of Pella, where they planted corn using horses the first year, and resided until retirement in 1993. Abe and Esther were blessed with three daughters and one son who were all actively involved with the farm work: Charlene, twins Lavonne and Laverne, and Doyle.

Abe enjoyed restoring antique cars and tractors, and was a member of the Dutch Masters Auto Club. After retiring, he and Esther also enjoyed several winters in Arizona. Abe was devoted to farming, he was a hard worker, and until the time of his death he continued to be of great help to his son who has managed the family farming operation in recent years.

Abe made Profession of Faith at Third Reformed Church in Pella; he and Esther were members there for many years until they became members of Heartland Reformed Church. Abe passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of eighty-four.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of sixty years, Esther; his children: Charlene (John) Verkade of Ames, Lavonne (John) Wright of Knoxville, Laverne Nunnikhoven of Pella, and Doyle Nunnikhoven of Pella; his grandchildren: Tricia Wright, and Kristen Wright and fiancé Brad Happ; step grandchildren: Elaine Burn, Geoffrey (Robin) Verkade, and Cyndi Bowlby; and step great-grandchildren: Craig De Vries, Kaylen Bowlby, and Tristan and Amelia Verkade; five brothers: Martin (Leona) Nunnikhoven of Pella, Marvin (Dorothy) Nunnikhoven of Oskaloosa, Anthony Jr. (JoAnn) Nunnikhoven of Waukee, Gerald Nunnikhoven of Pella, and Merle (Erma) Nunnikhoven of Pella; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy (the late Wilbur) Nunnikhoven of Leighton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wilbur Nunnikhoven; and two sisters-in-law: Bertha (Anthony Jr.) Nunnikhoven and Delores (Gerald) Nunnikhoven.
