Frances Vivian Van Wyk was born on March 27, 1918, to Weitz and Catherine Brand Kooistra at the family home north of Lynnville, Iowa. Frances passed away at the St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, Iowa, February 22, 2013, at age 94.

Frances attended Union School and then Lynnville High School.  On February 21, 1936, Frances was united in marriage with Wilburn Halsey Van Wyk at the Friends Church parsonage in New Sharon, Iowa. To this union five children were born:  Vernon, Bruce, Lois, Louise, and Barbara.  The family first lived in the Lynnville area and then moved to the Sully area where they remained the rest of their married life.  After 64 years of marriage, Wilburn passed away in 2000.  Frances continued living in Sully until 2008 and then moved to the St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, Iowa.

Frances was a fulltime homemaker and an active member of the Sully Community Church. She was an active member of the Women's Christian Fellowship, arranged fresh flowers arrangements for the Sunday services, and prepared the Communion table.  She was well known for her ministry of hospitality, often providing housing and meals for visiting missionaries and special speakers.  Frances reached out to others in the community – teaching home Bible studies and visiting newcomers to the church, the sick and elderly.  At one time she also wrote articles for the Pella newspaper.

At age 9, Frances' mother started teaching her piano lessons. After three lessons, Frances decided she could teach herself.  She mastered several songs reminiscent of her era.  No one ever tired hearing her play.  She took joy in mending clothes for others and making quilts from fabric remnants – both were consistent of her frugal ways.

Frances is survived by her children and their spouses:  Vernon and Loretta Van Wyk of Grinnell; Bruce and Marg Van Wyk of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Louise and Jim Walling of Austin, Tx.; Barbara and Paul Johnson of Woodbury, Minn.; son-in-law, Jerry Draayer of Baton Rouge, La.; foster daughter, Sandi Pollard of Altoona; 15 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and sister, Velma DeBoef and brother, Virgil Kooistra.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilburn in 2000, daughter Lois Draayer in 2009, and her grandson Vernon Wesley Van Wyk II in 1991, and three sisters, Lenora Reynolds, Edna Vande Krol, Sylvia Renaud and two brothers, Bernard and David Kooistra.
