Nellie Meurs Branderhorst was born November 11, 1925, at Opperdoes, The Netherlands, to Jan and Trijntje Visser Meurs. She went to her heavenly home on Monday, August 19, 2013, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of eighty-seven.
Nellie received her education at the ULO Medemblijk Nederland School in The Netherlands. On November 28, 1950, she was united in marriage with Nick Branderhorst at Gereformeerde Kerk in Opperdoes, The Netherlands. Nick and Nellie immigrated from The Netherlands to the United States on January 4, 1951. They settled in Pella, Iowa, where their three children were born: Kathy Ann on November 8, 1953, Nick Jr. on December 1, 1954, and Marlo Gene on April 6, 1956. Nick and Nellie worked hard and saved until they could buy a business. Together they owned and operated Nick's Greenhouse for forty-five years. Nick passed away March 8, 2002, and Nellie continued helping her son, Nick Jr. in the greenhouse business. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, reading, cooking, and gardening. Nellie was fluent in five languages and translated many Dutch and German documents for people.
In addition to being a homemaker, Nellie joined Nick as a travel host, making many trips to Europe. Those who traveled with them remember many good times with Nick and Nellie. Nellie made profession of faith in 1948 at the Gereformeerde Kerk in Opperdoes, The Netherlands. Since arriving in Pella in 1951, she has been a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Kathy and Darrell Noteboom of Alton, Iowa, Nick and Lynn Branderhorst, Jr., of Pella, Iowa, and Marlo and Lori Branderhorst of Fort Dodge, Iowa; her brothers: Klaas Meurs of California, Bill Meurs of California, and KeesMeurs of The Netherlands; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Nick; her son Gerrit Peter; and her siblings: sister, Andrea, and brother, Peter.
Nellie was a simple believer…"we have to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ."
"Lift your eyes upon the mountains
from where your help comes!"
