Magdalene Keuning Aalbers was born on December 29, 1916, near Otley, Iowa, to Peter and Gertie (Terlouw) Keuning. She was the fifth of eight children. Magdalene graduated from the eighth grade at a country school near Otley. On February 22, 1940, Magdalene was united in marriage to Marinus G. Aalbers at the church parsonage in Otley. Nine children were born to this couple.

Magdalene and Marinus farmed near Otley for a few years and then farmed for many years southwest of Prairie City. They moved to Monroe when they retired. Marinus passed away on August 11, 1994. Magdalene then moved to Pella in 2004.

Magdalene enjoyed farm life and caring for her family.  She did a great deal of gardening, canning, and baking.  She also loved to read and do handwork, especially quilting for her grandchildren. Many of her quilts she donated to Camp Courageous. Magdalene also worked for a time as a cook.

Magdalene will be remembered as a loving and accepting woman. She set a great example for her family as a faithful Bible reader and instilled in them all a strong work ethic. Her nurturing abilities were evident not only in her care for her family but also in her love of growing plants and raising animals. She retained close ties with her siblings throughout her life.

Magdalene passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center on February 7, 2014. She is survived by her eight children: Jerry (Donna) Aalbers of Des Moines, Gordon Aalbers of Frisco, Texas, Greta Aalbers of Des Moines, Mark (Nancy) Aalbers of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Marlene Aalbers of Des Moines, Karen (DeWayne) Repp of Albia, Anne Aalbers of Pella, and Mike (Dawn) Aalbers of Vandalia; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.  Of her original family, Magdalene leaves sisters Anna Van Zee of Willmar, Minnesota, Johanna Graves of Holland, Michigan, and I. Ruth Huyser of Pella, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her infant son Kenneth, her grandson Andrew Repp, and her great grandson Shane Crees.  The following members of her original family also preceded in death:  John and Janet Keuning, Jennie and Willis Vander Kooi, Bertha Keuning, Margaret and Nick De Ronde, Rev.
