Peter Andrew Hessing was born on May 9, 1926, in Oskaloosa, Iowa; the oldest of five sons of J. Andrew Hessing and Jennie Bloem Hessing. As a boy, Pete lived on a farm southeast of Pella and attended Pleasant View School. In March of 1940 his family moved to a farm south of Oskaloosa. After graduating from the eighth grade at Elm Grove School in 1941, Pete worked as a hired hand on neighboring farms.

From March of 1951 to March of 1953, Pete served in the 97th Field Artillery of the U.S. Army, stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado. He enjoyed Colorado, and it would become a frequent destination for family vacations.

Peter married Betty Joyce Steenhoek on November 17, 1955, at her parents' home near Leighton. Pete and Betty farmed north of Leighton for four years. During that time their daughters, Leanne, Lois, and Mary, were born. In 1960, the family moved to a farm near Rose Hill, and in January of 1965, they moved to Pella. Peter worked as a welder at Van Gorp Manufacturing from 1964 until his retirement in 1995.

During his retirement years, Pete worked picking apples at Pella Nursery. He took up woodworking as a hobby, and blessed his family with furniture and toys from his garage workshop. Pete also spent many hours making toys for the Toy Ministry. He served in quiet ways; driving people to the doctor or to In't Veld's for coffee, delivering meals, and correcting Bible study answers. Pete was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he served as treasurer of the Men's Society.

Peter enjoyed reading, and was always willing to read aloud to his children and grandchildren. He shared his love of nature with his family, pointing out trees and birds on Sunday afternoon drives in the country. Pete loved to travel, taking his family on vacation trips nearly every summer. He raised a garden every year, and did whatever needed to be done around the house, from repairs to washing dishes.

In his later years, Pete lived at Fair Haven East and Jefferson Place. He died on March 8, 2014 at Noord Holland Cottage in Pella.

Those left to cherish his memory are his three daughters; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Hessing and Elmer Hessing; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jim and Sheryll Steenhoek, Loren and Marge Steenhoek, and Esther and Owen Ver Meer; and seventeen nieces and nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Jennie Hessing; his wife Betty; two brothers, Marvin Hessing and Donald Hessing; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Bruxvoort Hessing and Eileen Hasselman Hessing.
