Leona Mae Van Sant was born on August 1, 1931, to John H. and Agnes Steenhoek Plate near Leighton, Iowa. She received her early education at a country school near her home.
On October 18, 1951, Leona was united in marriage with Geurt John Van Sant. They were blessed with four children: Gary Eugene, Roger Lee, Duane Allen, and Barbara Kay.
Leona was a devoted mother and homemaker. After raising her children to the teen years, she began employment with the Lynnville-Sully School District driving a school bus which she did for thirty-one years. She enjoyed following her children in their sporting and music events. She was actively involved in Dollars for Scholars at the Lynnville-Sully High School. She also enjoyed baking cakes for weddings and birthdays.

She is survived by her husband, Geurt, of Pella; her four children: Gary Van Sant of St. Charles, Missouri, Roger and Lisa Van Sant of Sully, Duane and Ann Van Sant of Des Moines, and Barbara Van Sant of Sully; two grandchildren: Anthony James and his wife, Keri, and Kathryn Sue; and one great-grandchild, Archer William.
