Lucile Mae (Vander Zyl) De Penning was born at home in Sully, Iowa, on March 21, 1939, to Ralph and Francis (Harthoorn) Vander Zyl.  She passed away August 31, 2015, at the Heritage Manor in Newton, Iowa, at the age of 76.

Lucile lived her entire life in Sully and was a graduate of Sully High School.  She and Howard De Penning grew up together in Sully and were married on April 17, 1959, at the First Reformed Church in Sully.  To this union, they were blessed with three sons:  Scott, Eric and Kyle.

Lucile was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sully and participated in many activities there including, Women's Guild, Youth Choir Director, Beginners and Primary Sunday School superintendent, and sang in the adult choir.  She was an accomplished seamstress who sewed many brides maid's dresses for weddings.  Her sons remember getting many compliments on the shirts she sewed for them too.  From time to time, Lucile would take a break from work to play piano and sing.  She enjoyed cooking for her family and for many other groups and would even butcher her own chickens.  Most of her career, Lucile worked as a bookkeeper in the Jasper County Savings Bank and also worked in other banks.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Howard; her sons and their wives:  Scott and Candice De Penning of Pella, Eric and Lynnette De Penning of Newton, and Kyle De Penning of Urbandale; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Katelyn De Penning and Sarah Gonzalez, Liz and Nick Brown, Dylan and Faith De Penning and their children Diesel and Mia, Ashley De Penning, Zach De Penning, Laura De Penning, and Halle De Penning.  She is also survived by her siblings and their spouses:  Roger and Beverly Vander Zyl of East Dubuque, Illinois, Carroll and Nancy De Penning of Newton, Larry De Penning of Ottumwa, Darlene Van Der Zyl of Sully, Ileen and Wayne Zegers of Grinnell, and Mildred and Larry Whetstine of Wellman, Iowa.

Lucile was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Francis Vander Zyl, brother Clarence, and parents-in-law Herman and Lucille De Penning.

Lucile was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
